History
This is a very special 2-Coin Set, issued by the Royal Mint. These two coins are dated 2023 and this set is called the “Great Engravers Petition Crown, Silver Proof, Two-Coin Set.”
Thomas Simon is the second of the Great Engravers to have his engraving honored by this set. Simon was the chief coin engraver for the Royal Mint, during the reigns of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell and Charles II and he is highly regarded as one of the finest engravers that the world has ever known. He was born in 1623 and died in 1665.
This silver coin captures the design that Simon created to “petition the King (Charles II) when he returned from exile, for employment as the Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint,” a position he had previously held – hence the name of the Petition Crown.
Design
The obverse of the first coin portrays the new monarch King Charles III, facing left, with “CHARLES III – D – G - REX – F – D - 5 POUNDS – 2023.” The reverse of that same coin has the 4 shield design that has been popularized over the centuries on British coinage.
The second coin uses the same King Charles III obverse portrait and inscriptions. The reverse of this coin depicts the Thomas Simon portrait Of King Charles II.
The doubled-banded edge inscriptions which were originally crafted by Thomas Simon are remarkable and were replicated using modern and unparalleled technology.
A very special Limited Edition set with a total worldwide mintage of 3,250 sets and all were sold out at the Royal Mint. Each coin contains 2 Troy Ounces of .999 Fine Silver. The coins are handsomely boxed and accompanied by a descriptive booklet.
