History
The US American Silver Eagle bullion coin program in 1986. It was an immediate success. In fact, it is believed that American Silver Eagle bullion coins are the most collected silver coins in the world.
Coin collectors and investors loved the design and the idea that buying a silver bullion coin can be accomplished with American coins.
Design
The American Silver Eagle bullion coin program was highly successful almost immediately. The coins have a well-known and much loved design. The US Mint recreated Adolph Weinman’s beautiful “Walking Liberty” design. That design graced American Half Dollar coins from 1916 to 1947.
The obverse depicts Miss Liberty wrapped in flowing robes with an American flag. Her right arm is outstretched in friendship to anyone near her. Her left hand is holding olive branches as a brilliant sun rises behind her. The effect is as beautiful as it was back in 1916.
The reverse was designed by the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint John Mercanti. His design recreated the Heraldic Eagle coinage design that was first used on Draped Bust Silver Dollars starting in the 1790s. It was a masterful choice to be paired with the Walking Liberty Half Dollar design.
This beautiful coin is a 1987-S American Silver Eagle coin. It has been graded as Proof-70 Ultra Cameo. The Proof-70 grade means that the coin has achieved the highest grade possible for a coin. This is based on the Sheldon scale that grades all coins on a scale from 1 to 70. A coin graded Poor-1 is barely identifiable while a coin graded Proof-70 means it is absolute perfection.
But not only is this coin graded as Proof-70, it is also designated as being “ULTRA CAMEO” which means that it has frosted devices and mirrored fields. They are the rarest and most desirable of all Proof coins.
The coin was graded and encapsulated by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) which is one of the major, independent coin grading services in the world. Only a very small handful of these grading services have wide dealer support and NGC is one of them.
