Excellent Web Site

The Liberty Coin Act created gold and silver bullion coins, based on Troy Ounce weights that the United States could sell to American and international buyers. These products would compete with bullion coins of other nations such as South Africa, Canada, and China whose products dominated international marketplaces. In 1986, the United States Mint began to strike and sell these coins. The coins were immediately successful and continue to this day.

Regarding the appearance of these coins, the Mint decided to shun any new ideas, at least for the obverse of the American Silver Eagle. The Mint chose to reproduce the ‘Walking Liberty’ design that was first used beginning in 1916 on the Walking Liberty series of half dollar coins. The coins were struck through 1947.

The Walking Liberty design was the creation of Adolph Weinman, who created this design and the popular ‘Mercury Dime’ design in 1916. The Walking Liberty design uses an allegorical representation of Miss Liberty, walking to the left. Her right hand is extended in a friendly gesture while her left arm cradles olive branches. There is a radiant sun rising behind her and she is wearing flowing robes. The upper periphery has the word “LIBERTY,” while the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is in the right field. The current year of striking is on the lower periphery.

The reverse was a new design by then-Chief Engraver John Mercanti, but he was inspired by a design that was first used in 1798, when the Mint had only been in operation for 5 years. The design that Mercanti used was a Heraldic Eagle design. The eagle was the central design element, and it had upward outstretched wing. A shield covered and protected its body, while it held arrows in one talon and olive branches in the other. Above the eagle, Mercanti had arranged 13 five-pointed stars. The upper periphery had ”UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” across the top and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR,” across the bottom.

This coin is a 2001-W American Silver Eagle, which has been graded as “PROOF 69, ULTRA CAMEO,” by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The coin sports the “W” mintmark, indicating that it was struck at the West Point minting facility. NGC is a major independent, third-party grading service, which is respected worldwide.
