History
In order to compete in the world market with the Krugerrand, the Maple Leaf, and other one-ounce gold coins, Congress enacted the “Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985,” which was signed into law by President Reagan. This Act gave the US Mint a mandate to create a One Ounce gold coin that would be sold to the general public. This coin would be symbolic of America and would be made from newly mined American Gold.
The US Mint wanted an important design that would be appreciated around the world. So, they chose to revive a highly acclaimed design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens previously used on the 1907 – 1933 Gold Double Eagle coins. This design was extremely well-known and appreciated.
In 1907 Saint-Gaudens created this design at the behest of his friend, President Teddy Roosevelt, who thought the then-current American coinage was boring and atrocious. Roosevelt wanted coinage that would parallel the artistic and symbolic coinage of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Saint-Gaudens did not disappoint and even gave his examples of this coin a high-relief similar to that of the ancient coins. The design really stood out and gave the coins a classical look.
Design
The obverse has Miss Liberty striding towards the viewer as she holds a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. She is surrounded by stars on the upper periphery, rays of the sun behind her, and in the distance is Washington, DC, with the US Capitol Building being visible. The reverse depicts a Family of Eagles design by artist Miley Busiek, That design graced the reverse until part way through 2021 when a new design by Artis, Jennie Norris, provided a close-up view of an American Bald Eagle’s head.
This coin was struck in both Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof methods of manufacture. Because the coins are struck in 22 carat (.9167 Fine Gold), the coins weigh slightly over 1 Troy Ounce to give the buyer a full troy ounce of pure gold. A tiny bit of copper was alloyed to the gold to improve the coin's durability.
These American Gold Eagle bullion coins are some of the most popular One Troy Ounce gold coins in not only the United States but also worldwide. That is due in large measure to the popularity of the design and the fact that the coins are backed by the good faith and credit of the United States government. These coins can be included in Precious Metal IRAs.
