History

Based on the 20 years of success of the American Gold Eagle program, in 2006 the US Mint created a bullion program that was based on a brand new type of coin – a .9999 fine gold bullion coin.
This coin was designed to compete with the other strictly bullion coins in the marketplace. While the fineness of the coin was new to the US Mint, the design certainly was not.
In 1913, James Earle Fraser designed one of the most iconic American coins ever – the Buffalo Nickel. This coin was struck between 1913 and 1938.

Design

The obverse depicts a composite image of the head of several Native American chiefs. The reverse depicts an American Bison, modeled after Black Diamond, a bison held at the Central Park Zoo in New York City that Fraser utilized for his design.
Fraser’s images have been considered by many as the epitome of Western Americana. So, they were a natural to be re-used for this new bullion coin.
First struck in 2006, the 1 Troy Ounce coin was made of .9999 Fine Gold and bore a $50 denomination. The coins were struck in both Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof methods of manufacture. American Gold Buffalo bullion coins may be acceptable for inclusion in Precious Metal IRA’s.
For one year only, 3 additional fractional coins were also struck, a Half Ounce ($25), a Quarter Ounce ($10) and a Tenth Ounce ($5) – 70 years after the last Buffalo Nickel had been struck in 1938.
This coin is a 2024 $50.00 American Gold Buffalo .9999 Fine Gold, 1 Troy Ounce, graded MS70, First Strike, which was graded and certified by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). PCGS is one of the largest and most important independent, third-party grading services.
