The Perth Mint’s superstar gold coin – the Kangaroo – started life as a different coin with a different name. When the Perth Mint first struck a gold bullion coin in 1986, there was no kangaroo depicted on the coins. Depicted were Australian Gold Nuggets, which while interesting are not as directly tied to Australia as the Kangaroo which holds a strong place in the world’s heart and is synonymous with Australia. The Australian Gold Nuggets were depicted in 1986 through 1989.
But in 1989, beginning with the Proof issue, the Kangaroo supplanted the Gold Nugget and became the permanent symbol of these important coins. The 2024 Gold Kangaroo ¼ Troy Ounce gold coin has a strict limited mintage of 150,000 coins worldwide.
Design
Since their inception in 1989, the effigy on the obverse of the coin has always been a current version of the coin effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest serving monarch in British history.
Beginning in 2023, and, ostensibly for years to come, with the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September of 2022, the Perth Mint utilized the Dan Thorne effigy of his majesty King Charles III. The king is shown in a business suit and facing to the left. Around the periphery of the coin are “CHARLES III,” “AUSTRALIA,” and the current coin date, which is now “2024.”
The reverse design depicts a large kangaroo attempting to jump over a dry creek bed. In the background are a water storage tank and a windmill, which are very common, especially in agrarian Western Australia. The inscriptions are “KANGAROO,” the date “2024,” and “P125,” which represents the Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary in 2024.
