History
The Canadian government began to issue its own gold bullion coins in 1979. That year through 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint only struck 1 Troy Ounce coins that were made of .999 Fine Gold.
In November of 1982, the RCM expanded their offerings to include a 1 Troy Ounce, a ΒΌ Troy Ounce and a 1/10th Troy Ounce and the fineness was increased from .999 to .9999 and they were the first β€œ4 Nine’s” bullion coins to be struck.
Design
Various other sizes were added such as 1/15th Troy Ounce, 1/20th Troy Ounce and even down to 1 Gram throughout the minting history. From 1982 through 2023 the monarch depicted on the obverse was Queen Elizabeth II. Upon her passing in September of 2022, the official coinage portrait was being readied but the effigy of King Charles III did not appear on these coins until the 2024-dated coins.
The 2024 Gold Maple Leaf bears the new effigy of King Charles III, deigned by Canadian artist Stephen Rosati. The new monarch faces to the left and is dressed in a business suit. Above the effigy is β€œCHARLES III,” and below is β€œ10 DOLLARS” and β€œ2024.” The effigy has a radial line background to deter counterfeiting.
The reverse of the coin depicts the national symbol of Canda – the Maple Leaf. It also displays above β€œCANADA,” and below is β€œFINE GOLD – ΒΌ OZ OR PUR,” and on both sides were β€œ.9999.”
The radial line background was created by the Royal Canadian Mint, and it diffracts light in a distinct pattern, which is extremely difficult to counterfeit due to the high technology used to create the lines to form a specific pattern. The Royal Canadian Mint is on the cutting edge of worldwide anti-counterfeiting technology for coinage.
