History

American Gold Eagle bullion coins are the most popular gold bullion coins in the world today. But in 1967, South Africa released the world’s first bullion gold coin – the Krugerrand.
Watching the success of a 1 Troy Ounce gold coin inspired other nations to follow suit, as using a common weight made both investment and exchanges easy to calculate. China, Canada, and the United States all launched coins with the American Gold Eagle coming in 1986.
Soon, Austria and Great Britain also joined the list of countries striking bullion gold coins. Today, the market is inundated with issues from both large and small countries as well as thousands of issues from private mints.
The popularity of American Gold Eagle bullion coins also grew due to the fact that the US Mint produced fractional coins as well – One-Half, One-Quarter, and One-Tenth Troy Ounces led to the American Eagle bullion coins popularity as they were affordable for every budget.
With millions of these coins issued annually, many varieties began to proliferate in the marketplace. Coins were graded, certified, and encapsulated by the major grading services. These certified coins also spawned numerous varieties – First Day of Issue, Early Release, Signed Inserts, and a whole slate of other varieties.

Design

The American Gold Eagle bullion coin program was begun in 1986. The obverse utilized the Augustus Saint-Gaudens design for the 1907-1933 $20 Gold Double Eagle. It was a very faithful reproduction.
The reverse is a closeup of an American Bald Eagle, facing left, as designed by Jennie Norris, part way through 2021. This design replaced Miley Busiek’s ‘Family of Eagles’ earlier design of 1986 to 2021.
This coin is a 2024 American Gold Eagle MS 70, Early Release, as graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), one of the largest, independent, third-party coin grading services. When NGC awards the Early Release designation it guarantees that these coins were shipped by the US Mint within the first 30 days after the coins were launched.
