History

Beginning in 1986, the United States Mint began striking gold coins that were competitors to the proliferation of bullion-inspired coins worldwide. Unlike prior gold coins, these coins contained exactly 1 Troy Ounce of pure gold.
Based on the success of these bullion coins, the US Mint continued to strike these coins annually in both Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof. The coins carry a $50 denomination and were struck in 22 carat  (.9167 Fine Gold). The coins weigh slightly over One Troy Ounce, to account for the copper alloy that is added to make these coins more durable.

Design

The obverse depicts the Mint’s rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens $20.00 gold Double Eagle coins that were struck between 1907 and 1933. The reverse of the coins until mid-way through 2021 with Miley Busiek’s Family of Eagles reverse.
Part way through 2021, the reverse design was changed to depict a close-up of an American Bald Eagle. It was designed by Jennie Norris, a member of the US Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program.
American Gold Eagles are the most popular One Troy Ounce gold coins not only in the United States but in many other countries as well, because these coins are backed by the good faith and credit of the United States government, in addition to the gold content. These coins can be included in Precious Metal IRAs.
