Introduction

The $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is one of the most celebrated gold coins in United States history. Designed by renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, the series is admired for its artistry, historical significance, and substantial gold content. This example is graded MS65 and has received CAC approval, combining Gem Uncirculated preservation with an additional assessment of quality within the assigned grade. Dates and mintmarks vary based on availability.

History

The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle debuted in 1907, replacing the Liberty Head Double Eagle as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's effort to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. The earliest 1907 pieces included the celebrated High Relief issues, but production challenges led the U.S. Mint to adopt a lower-relief design better suited for regular coinage.

Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles were produced from 1907 through 1916 and again from 1920 through 1933 at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints. The original design omitted the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, which was added to the reverse during 1908 following congressional action. The number of stars on the obverse also increased from 46 to 48 in 1912 following the admission of New Mexico and Arizona to the Union. These variations reflect the evolution of the design throughout its production history.

Design

The obverse features a full-length figure of Liberty advancing forward, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Rays of the rising sun extend behind her, with the U.S. Capitol visible in the background. LIBERTY appears above, surrounded by stars representing the states of the Union, while the date appears at lower right.

The reverse depicts a majestic eagle in flight above rays of the rising sun. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS appear above the eagle, while later issues also feature the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The edge is lettered E PLURIBUS UNUM, distinguishing the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle from many other classic U.S. gold coins.
