Introduction
The 1885-CC $20 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle is a scarce Carson City Mint gold coin from the American West. Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, this Type III Double Eagle is highly sought after for its low original mintage, historic mintmark, and limited availability in Mint State condition. This example is graded PCGS MS62 and has received CAC approval, combining Uncirculated preservation with an additional assessment of quality within the assigned grade.
History
The Liberty Head Double Eagle was introduced in 1850 following the California Gold Rush, when increased gold production created a need for higher-denomination federal coinage. The $20 gold piece became an important instrument of commerce, particularly throughout the expanding American West.
The Carson City Mint opened in Nevada in 1870 to process precious metals from the region's mining industry, including deposits associated with the Comstock Lode. Coins bearing the CC mintmark remain closely connected to the history of western mining and frontier commerce.
In 1885, the Carson City Mint struck just 9,450 Liberty Head Double Eagles. This comparatively small production makes the 1885-CC a notable issue within the Carson City gold series. While circulated examples occasionally become available, Mint State survivors are considerably more difficult to obtain, reflecting the limited number of coins preserved without circulation wear.
The 1885-CC belongs to the Type III Liberty Head Double Eagle series, introduced in 1877 when the denomination inscription was expanded to TWENTY DOLLARS. Today, the issue attracts collectors seeking scarce Carson City gold coins, complete Liberty Head Double Eagle collections, and well-preserved examples of 19th-century American coinage.
Design
The obverse features James B. Longacre's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Her hair is gathered into a bun with curls descending behind her neck, while thirteen stars representing the original states surround the portrait. The date 1885 appears below.
The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings and a shield on its breast, holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons. An oval of stars and rays surrounds the eagle, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA appears around the design, while TWENTY DOLLARS identifies the denomination below. The CC mintmark beneath the eagle signifies production at the historic Carson City Mint.
