Introduction
The 1903-O Morgan Silver Dollar graded NGC MS63 is a Choice Mint State example with one of the most fascinating histories in the Morgan Dollar series. Certified MS63 by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), this New Orleans Mint issue combines full Mint State preservation with 90% silver content and the classic design of George T. Morgan. Once considered one of the greatest rarities of the Morgan Dollar series, the 1903-O gained an entirely new place in numismatic history when substantial quantities were released from government storage beginning in 1962.
History
The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878 following passage of the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase substantial quantities of silver and convert it into silver dollars. Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan created the design for the denomination, beginning a series that would become one of the most recognizable and widely collected in American numismatics.
The New Orleans Mint struck 4,450,000 Morgan Dollars in 1903, but relatively few entered circulation at the time. For decades, Mint State examples were considered exceptionally rare, and the 1903-O developed a reputation as one of the key issues of the entire Morgan Dollar series. That changed dramatically beginning in 1962, when bags containing large quantities of uncirculated 1903-O dollars were released from government storage. The sudden appearance of these coins transformed the issue's perceived rarity and became one of the most famous events in twentieth-century Morgan Dollar collecting.
Design
The obverse features George T. Morgan's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, reflecting the nation's agricultural heritage. A ribbon in Liberty's hair is inscribed with LIBERTY. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears above, thirteen stars represent the original states, and the date 1903 appears below.
The reverse depicts a bald eagle with outstretched wings, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. A wreath surrounds the eagle, while the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR complete the design. The O mintmark beneath the wreath identifies this example as a product of the New Orleans Mint.
