Introduction
The 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter graded NGC MS67 Full Head CAC is an exceptional example of one of the most distinctive designs in early twentieth-century American coinage. Certified MS67 by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), awarded the desirable Full Head designation, and approved by CAC, this coin combines superb preservation with an unusually sharp strike. As a Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarter, it also represents the short-lived original version of Hermon A. MacNeil's celebrated design.
History
The Standing Liberty Quarter was introduced in 1916 as part of a broader transformation of American silver coinage. Designed by sculptor Hermon A. MacNeil, the series replaced the Barber Quarter and reflected the artistic renaissance that reshaped U.S. coin designs during the early twentieth century.
The original Type 1 design was produced only in 1916 and part of 1917 before the quarter was modified later in 1917. The revised Type 2 design added chain mail to Liberty's torso and rearranged elements of the reverse. The Philadelphia Mint struck 8,740,000 Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarters in 1917, making the issue an important and widely collected representative of this brief first design type. At the MS67 level, however, exceptional preservation becomes considerably more significant, while the Full Head designation identifies an example with particularly strong definition in one of the design's key focal areas.
Design
The obverse depicts Liberty standing within a gateway, holding a shield in her left hand and an olive branch in her right. The shield represents defense, while the olive branch symbolizes peace. The inscription LIBERTY appears above, with IN GOD WE TRUST divided to either side and the date 1917 below. On Type 1 examples, Liberty's right breast is exposed, a feature that was altered when the design was revised later that year.
The reverse features an eagle in flight with its wings extended. Thirteen stars accompany the eagle, while the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and QUARTER DOLLAR complete the design. The Full Head designation awarded by NGC recognizes an especially well-struck head of Liberty, with clearly defined hair and facial details that meet NGC's requirements for the designation.
