In 1986, the American Silver Eagle bullion coin program was implemented. It was an immediate success and the coins sold extremely quickly. Many collectors and investors supported that program and continued to buy these coins not only in the inaugural year but in subsequent years as well.  The coins succeeded due to a variety of factors – design, price, availability, and patriotism. American collectors, investors and dealers loved buying American bullion products now that they were finally available.  The obverse of the coin was successful not only when it was launched as a silver bullion coin. It was also very successful 71 years prior, when it graced the obverse of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar series of circulating coinage back in 1916.  The Mint wisely re-used the Walking Liberty design first created by Adolph Weinman for those half dollar coins. They used that same design, but it was still popular, and it met the requirements that Congress had mandated for this coin.   The obverse depicted an allegorical rendition of Miss Liberty, walking to the left. In a gesture of friendship, her right hand is extended outward, while her left arm cradles a bundle of olive branches. Above Miss Liberty is the word “LIBERTY,” the motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is in the right field and below Miss Liberty  is the date the coin was struck.  The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle, shield covering its body, with arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Above the eagle is “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and on the lower periphery is “1 Oz. FINE SILVER -  ONE DOLLAR.”  This coin is a 1987 American Silver Eagle which has been graded as MS69 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). NGC is one of the major, third-party, independent grading services and is respected worldwide. The grade of “MS69” means that the coin is one tiny point away from perfection. It is in very high grade.  From 1986, the initial year, until 1998, bullion American Silver Eagle coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint, but they do not bear an “S” mintmark.   Simply click the “Add to Cart” button now or call 1-866-827-4314 to speak to one of our highly trained numismatists, who will be very happy to assist you.
