Introduction
The $2½ Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle Certified MS64 CAC is a remarkable example of early 20th-century American coinage innovation. Graded MS64 and verified by CAC, this coin displays exceptional surfaces, rich luster, and sharp design definition. Struck in .900 fine gold, it represents a blend of artistry, rarity, and historical importance that continues to captivate collectors and investors alike.
History
First introduced in 1908, the Indian Head Quarter Eagle was designed by Bela Lyon Pratt as part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s bold initiative to reform and beautify U.S. coinage. Pratt’s design broke from convention with its distinctive incuse (sunken) relief, where the images and inscriptions are recessed into the coin’s surface rather than raised above it.
Produced from 1908 through 1929, this series marked a turning point in American coin design and history. The Indian Head Quarter Eagle circulated during a period of rapid economic growth, only to be withdrawn and melted following the 1933 Gold Recall. Surviving pieces, especially those certified at the near-Gem MS64 level and endorsed by CAC, are now highly sought after for their rarity, craftsmanship, and pristine preservation.
Design
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of a Native American chief adorned with a detailed feathered headdress. Surrounding the profile are thirteen stars symbolizing the original colonies, the word LIBERTY, and the year of mintage. The reverse depicts a majestic bald eagle standing proudly on a bundle of arrows and an olive branch—representing strength and peace—alongside the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST.
Both sides of the coin are recessed below the surface, giving the $2½ Indian its distinctive texture and visual depth. This Certified MS64 CAC coin showcases vibrant gold luster and sharp detail, preserving Bela Lyon Pratt’s bold and enduring artistic vision.
