In 1986, the United States Mint released struck, sold, and released its very first bullion coins in silver. These coins were and continue to be a tremendous success both domestically and around the world.
The US Mint chose a proven design to adorn the obverse of these new American Silver Eagle bullion coins. The Mint chose the ‘Walking Liberty’ design that was first used on circulating half dollar coins issued between 1916 through 1947. This design, created by the famed artist, Adolph Weinman.
The Walking Liberty design uses a representation of Miss Liberty, walking to the left. Her right hand is extended while her left cradles bunches of olive branches. There is a beautiful and radiant sun rising behind her, with its rays shooting outwards. She is wearing flowing robes and has an American flag wrapped around her shoulders. On the upper periphery is the word “LIBERTY,” while the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is visible in the right field. The current year of striking is on the bottom periphery.
Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John Mercanti designed the reverse of the Silver Eagle. The design is called the Heraldic Eagle design. The eagle is the central element, and it has upward, outstretched wings. A shield covers its body, and the eagle holds arrows in one talon and olive branches in the other. Above the eagle, there are 13 five-pointed stars. The upper periphery had ”UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” across the top and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR,” across the bottom.
This coin is a 2005-W American Silver Eagle, graded as “PROOF 69, ULTRA CAMEO,” by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). NGC is one of the major, independent, third-party grading service. The coin has the “W” mintmark, indicating that it was struck at the West Point minting facility. The ‘Proof 69’ grade means its only 1 point shy of perfection while the ‘Ultra Cameo’ designation means there is great contrast between the fields and the frosted devices.
