Introduction
The 2006-W 1 oz American Silver Eagle graded NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo is a beautifully preserved proof from the 20th anniversary year of the American Silver Eagle program. Certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) at PF69, just one point below a perfect grade, this coin also earned the Ultra Cameo designation for its strong contrast between deeply mirrored fields and frosted design elements. Struck at the West Point Mint from one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, it combines precious metal content with exceptional proof craftsmanship and collector appeal.
History
The American Silver Eagle was introduced in 1986 following passage of the Liberty Coin Act of 1985. Created as the official silver bullion coin of the United States, the program quickly became popular with both investors and collectors. Proof versions were produced specifically for collectors using specially prepared planchets and dies to create sharper details and highly reflective surfaces.
The year 2006 marked the 20th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle program. Proof Silver Eagles were struck at the West Point Mint that year and carry the facility's distinctive W mintmark. The U.S. Mint reported a final mintage of 1,092,477 for the standard 2006-W proof Silver Eagle. An NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo example offers exceptional preservation along with the dramatic visual contrast prized on modern proof coinage.
Design
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman's celebrated Walking Liberty design, originally introduced on the half dollar in 1916. Liberty strides toward the rising sun while draped in the American flag, carrying branches of laurel and oak that symbolize civil and military achievement. The inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST accompany the date 2006.
The reverse features former U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti's heraldic eagle design. A bald eagle appears behind a shield while holding an olive branch and arrows, with thirteen stars arranged above to represent the original colonies. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, ONE DOLLAR, and E PLURIBUS UNUM complete the design. The W mintmark identifies the coin as a product of the West Point Mint.
