Introduction
The 2010-W 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof certified by NGC combines one troy ounce of .999 fine silver with the specialized craftsmanship of a collector proof coin. Struck at the West Point Mint, this issue features mirrored fields and frosted design elements that highlight the details of the classic American Silver Eagle. The 2010-W also marked the return of the Proof Silver Eagle following a one-year interruption in production, adding historical interest to this modern American silver coin.
History
The American Silver Eagle was introduced in 1986 following passage of the Liberty Coin Act of 1985. Created as the official silver bullion coin of the United States, the series quickly became popular with both precious metals buyers and collectors. Proof editions were produced specifically for the collector market using specially prepared blanks and dies to create sharply defined details and contrasting mirrored and frosted surfaces.
No Proof Silver Eagles were produced in 2009 as the United States Mint directed available silver planchets toward meeting unprecedented demand for bullion coins. Proof production returned in 2010, with the 2010-W Silver Eagle released late in the year and a final mintage of 849,861 coins. The issue continued the original design introduced in 1986, pairing Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty with John Mercanti's heraldic eagle reverse.
Design
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman's celebrated Walking Liberty design, originally introduced on the half dollar in 1916. Liberty strides toward the rising sun while draped in the American flag and carrying branches of laurel and oak. The inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date 2010 complete the obverse.
The reverse features John Mercanti's heraldic eagle design. A bald eagle appears behind a shield while holding an olive branch and arrows, with thirteen stars arranged above to represent the original states. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR surround the design. The W mintmark identifies the proof coin as a product of the West Point Mint.
