Introduction

The Austrian Gold 100 Corona Coin combines nearly one full troy ounce of gold with the history and imperial imagery of Austria-Hungary. Struck in .900 fine gold and containing approximately .9802 troy ounces of pure gold, the 100 Corona features Emperor Franz Joseph I and the crowned double-headed eagle of the Habsburg monarchy. Its substantial gold content, large 37-millimeter format, and classic European design have made the 1915-dated restrike a longstanding choice among precious metals investors and collectors of historic world gold.

History

Austria introduced the corona, or crown, in 1892 as part of a major currency reform that replaced the gulden. Gold 10 and 20 Corona coins were introduced as part of the new monetary system, followed in 1908 by a 100 Corona gold coin commemorating the 60th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph I’s reign.

The familiar 100 Corona design featuring Franz Joseph and the imperial double-headed eagle was introduced in 1909 and continued through the final years of his reign. The Austrian Mint later produced official restrikes bearing the frozen date of 1915, preserving the historic specifications and imagery of the original coinage. These restrikes remain available as investment gold today, offering nearly a full troy ounce of gold in a format rooted in the final years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Design

The obverse features a right-facing portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who ruled from 1848 until his death in 1916 and became one of Europe’s longest-reigning monarchs. A Latin inscription surrounding the portrait identifies his imperial and royal titles, reflecting the sprawling multinational monarchy over which he ruled.

The reverse depicts the crowned imperial double-headed eagle bearing the arms of Austria, one of the defining symbols of Habsburg rule. The denomination appears alongside the elaborate heraldic design, while the edge carries the imperial motto VIRIBUS UNITIS, meaning “With United Forces.” Struck to the same .900 fine gold standard as the historic originals, the 1915 restrike connects substantial precious metal content with the final era of imperial Austrian coinage.
