The Austrian Mint introduced the Silver Vienna Philharmonic in 2008, expanding the Philharmonic bullion series beyond its original gold format. The silver coin became the first euro-denominated silver bullion coin and has been issued annually since its debut.
Unlike bullion series that introduce new artwork each year, the Silver Philharmonic retains the same music-inspired design created by Thomas Pesendorfer. Design
The obverse depicts the Great Organ in the Golden Hall of Vienna's Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Inscriptions identify the issuing country, silver weight and purity, year of issue, and 1.50 euro denomination.
The reverse features an arrangement of orchestral instruments associated with the Vienna Philharmonic, including a cello, violins, harp, Vienna horn, and bassoon. The inscription WIENER PHILHARMONIKER identifies the celebrated orchestra that inspired the series.
