Introduction

The 1808 $2.50 Capped Bust Gold Quarter Eagle graded PCGS MS61 is one of the landmark rarities of early American gold coinage. Certified Mint State 61 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), this coin represents a true one-year design type with an original mintage of just 2,710 pieces. Struck during the formative years of the United States Mint and preserved without the wear expected from circulation, the 1808 Quarter Eagle holds an important place in both early gold collections and complete U.S. coin type sets.

History

The Capped Bust Quarter Eagle debuted in 1808 with a new design by Assistant Engraver John Reich, whose work brought a distinctly different artistic style to American coinage. Remarkably, the entire mintage of 2,710 Quarter Eagles was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on February 26, 1808, using a single pair of dies. It would be the first and last production run for Reich’s Quarter Eagle design.

Demand for the $2.50 denomination was extremely limited at the time, with banks favoring the larger $5 Half Eagle for reserves and international payments. During production, the obverse die developed a progressive crack and likely failed. With little demand to justify preparing another, Quarter Eagle production ceased and would not resume until 1821, when a modified design was introduced. That unusual sequence of events left the 1808 as a one-year-only type and one of the classic rarities of early U.S. gold coinage.

Design

The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a large cap with a headband inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states surround the portrait, with the date positioned below. All 1808 Quarter Eagles were produced from the same die pair, and surviving examples share distinctive characteristics including generally weak borders and a progressive obverse die crack.

The reverse features an eagle with a Union shield across its breast, clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons. A scroll bearing E PLURIBUS UNUM appears above, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the design and 2 1/2 D. identifies the denomination below. With its tiny mintage, single-day production, and status as the only Quarter Eagle of its design, the 1808 remains one of the most distinctive issues of America’s early Mint.
