Introduction

The 1912 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle graded PCGS PR67 CAC is an exceptional survivor from one of the most distinctive eras of American Proof coinage. Certified Proof 67 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and approved by Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), this Superb Gem displays the finely textured sandblast finish characteristic of the issue. With remarkable preservation and an original Proof mintage of just 197 coins, it represents an impressive example of Bela Lyon Pratt’s revolutionary incuse gold design.

History

The Indian Head Quarter Eagle was introduced in 1908 during President Theodore Roosevelt’s campaign to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, the series departed dramatically from traditional coinage by placing its principal design elements below the coin’s surface rather than raising them in relief. The result was an unmistakable design unlike anything previously produced for regular U.S. coinage.

The Philadelphia Mint struck just 197 Proof Quarter Eagles in 1912. Although this was the second-highest reported Proof mintage of the series, surviving examples are considerably scarcer than that figure might suggest, with PCGS estimating roughly 100 survivors across all grades. Proof gold of this era also featured experimental finishes that differed considerably from the brilliant Proofs collectors knew from earlier decades. The 1912 issue displays a fine-grain sandblast texture, making its appearance as distinctive as Pratt’s incuse design itself.

Design

The obverse features a Native American in a feathered headdress facing left, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date positioned below. Pratt’s recessed design places the portrait, lettering, stars, and other major elements below the surrounding field, creating the unusual appearance that has defined the Indian Quarter Eagle for more than a century.

The reverse depicts an eagle standing upon a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbols of military preparedness and peace. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2 1/2 DOLLARS complete the design. In PR67 CAC, the delicate sandblast surfaces remain exceptionally well preserved, an important distinction on a Proof finish particularly vulnerable to visible contact and handling.
