Introduction

The 1861 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle graded NGC AU55 is a well-preserved example of classic United States gold coinage from one of the most consequential years in American history. Certified About Uncirculated 55 by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), this coin survives with only light circulation wear. Struck during the opening year of the Civil War, the 1861 Half Eagle combines the enduring appeal of Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Head design with a direct connection to a defining moment in the nation’s history.

History

The Liberty Head Half Eagle was introduced in 1839 and remained in production through 1908, giving Christian Gobrecht’s design a remarkable 70-year presence on the $5 denomination. Half Eagles played an important role in commerce, banking, and trade throughout the nineteenth century and were struck at multiple federal and branch mint facilities as the nation expanded.

The Philadelphia Mint struck 688,084 Half Eagles in 1861, the highest mintage of the No Motto type. Yet the year itself was anything but ordinary. The Civil War began with the attack on Fort Sumter in April, and mounting uncertainty increasingly disrupted the nation’s financial system. By December, Northern banks suspended specie payments, accelerating the disappearance of gold from everyday circulation as Americans hoarded precious metal coins. An NGC AU55 example preserves this historic issue at the About Uncirculated level, offering a tangible connection to the economic uncertainty of the Civil War’s opening year.

Design

The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states surround her portrait, with the date positioned below. Gobrecht’s classical interpretation of Liberty became one of the defining images of nineteenth-century American gold coinage.

The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings and a Union shield across its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons as symbols of peace and military preparedness. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE D. identify the issuing nation and denomination. Because IN GOD WE TRUST was not added to the Half Eagle until 1866, the 1861 represents the earlier No Motto design type.
