Introduction

The 1843-O $5 Liberty Large Letters Gold Half Eagle graded NGC AU53 is a well-preserved example of early branch-mint United States gold coinage. Certified About Uncirculated 53 by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), this New Orleans Mint issue retains substantial design detail and represents the distinctive Large Letters variety of the 1843-O Half Eagle. Combining nineteenth-century Southern mint history, gold content, and the appeal of a recognized Liberty Head variety, this coin offers collectors a tangible connection to the early years of the New Orleans Mint.

History

The Liberty Head Half Eagle was introduced in 1839 and remained in production through 1908, making it one of the longest-running gold coin series in United States history. Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht, the $5 denomination was struck at several federal and branch mints and circulated during a period of tremendous economic and geographic expansion in the United States.

The New Orleans Mint struck 189,080 Liberty Head Half Eagles in 1843, with two major reverse varieties recognized for the year: Small Letters and Large Letters. The Large Letters variety is distinguished by noticeably larger reverse lettering positioned differently around the eagle than on its Small Letters counterpart. Because production totals were not recorded separately for the two varieties, an exact mintage for the Large Letters issue is not known. Graded NGC AU53, this example represents a desirable survivor from an era when gold coins routinely entered circulation and played an important role in American commerce.

Design

The obverse features Christian Gobrecht's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states surround the portrait, while the date 1843 appears below. Gobrecht's classical portrait became one of the defining images of nineteenth-century American gold coinage.

The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with a shield across its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE D. surround the eagle. On the Large Letters variety, the reverse lettering is noticeably larger than on the Small Letters variety, providing the primary distinction between the two 1843-O types. The O mintmark identifies the coin as a product of the New Orleans Mint.
