Introduction
The 1907 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle graded PCGS MS63 is a choice Mint State example from the first year of one of the most celebrated designs in American coinage. Struck in .900 fine gold and containing nearly one troy ounce of pure gold, this historic Double Eagle pairs substantial precious metal content with the artistry of sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Its MS63 grade from Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) confirms an attractive uncirculated example with original mint luster and strong overall eye appeal.
History
The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle debuted in 1907 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's effort to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Roosevelt commissioned renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the nation's $20 gold piece, resulting in a design that departed dramatically from the Liberty Head Double Eagle it replaced.
The earliest 1907 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles were struck in High Relief and featured the date MCMVII in Roman numerals. Although visually impressive, the design required multiple strikes and proved impractical for large-scale production. The relief was subsequently reduced and the date changed to Arabic numerals, creating the version represented by this coin. The Philadelphia Mint struck 361,667 of the 1907 Arabic Numerals Double Eagles. These first-year coins also lack the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, which was added to the design later in 1908.
Design
The obverse features a full-length figure of Liberty advancing forward while holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Rays of the rising sun appear behind her, with the U.S. Capitol visible in the background. The inscription LIBERTY appears above, surrounded by stars, while the Arabic date 1907 appears at lower right.
The reverse depicts an eagle in flight above the rays of the rising sun. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS appear above the eagle. Unlike later Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles, the 1907 issue does not include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The edge features the inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM in raised lettering rather than conventional reeding.
