Introduction
The 2024 Flowing Hair $1 Gold High Relief 230th Anniversary coin graded PCGS PR70 celebrates one of the foundational designs in American coinage. Created to mark 230 years since the issuance of the 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar, this modern tribute was struck in high relief from one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold. Its perfect PR70 grade from Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) recognizes a proof coin with no post-production imperfections visible under magnification.
History
In 1794, the United States issued its first federal dollar coin, featuring Robert Scot's Flowing Hair design. The coin represented an important milestone for the young nation as it established its own federal monetary system and national coinage.
The U.S. Mint commemorated the 230th anniversary of that historic dollar in 2024 with the Flowing Hair High Relief Gold Coin. The original 1794 designs were carefully re-sculpted for the modern issue, preserving the character of the early American coin while presenting it in high relief and one ounce of .9999 fine gold. Struck at the West Point Mint without a mintmark, the standard issue was limited to a maximum mintage of 17,500 coins.
Design
The obverse recreates the original Flowing Hair portrait of Liberty facing right, her long hair flowing behind her. The inscription LIBERTY appears above, while fifteen stars represent the states that had ratified the Constitution by 1794. The modern date 2024 appears below the portrait.
The reverse depicts a small eagle with outstretched wings surrounded by a laurel wreath, closely reflecting the design of the original 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the design, while the coin's high-relief format gives added depth and definition to the historic imagery.
