History

China introduced the Gold Panda series in 1982 with gold coins containing one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce of gold. Unlike many bullion programs, the Panda quickly developed a strong collector following through detailed artwork and a tradition of introducing a new panda design on most annual releases. The original 1982 coins were issued without face values, with denominations added to the series beginning in 1983.

The one-tenth-ounce Gold Panda remained part of the series through 2015. Beginning in 2016, China transitioned the Panda program from traditional troy-ounce measurements to metric weights, replacing the 1/10 oz coin with a 3 gram gold issue. Across its production run, the fractional format featured numerous changing panda designs and denominations, giving collectors a wide variety of issues within the same long-running series.

Design

The obverse features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests within Beijing’s Temple of Heaven, an architectural landmark dating to the Ming dynasty. The Chinese inscription 中华人民共和国, meaning “People’s Republic of China,” appears above the temple, with the year of issue positioned below.

The reverse features China’s giant panda, with the composition changing on most issues from year to year. Depending on the date, designs may depict individual or multiple pandas climbing, resting, playing, or eating bamboo. This changing annual artwork became one of the defining characteristics of the Gold Panda series, giving each date its own visual identity while maintaining one of the most recognizable themes in modern world bullion coinage.
