Introduction

The 1849 $1 Gold Type 1 Gold Dollar marks the beginning of a fascinating chapter in American numismatic history. Certified by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), this first-year issue represents the debut of the smallest gold denomination ever struck by the United States Mint. Arriving just as the California Gold Rush began transforming the nation’s economy and dramatically increasing its gold supply, the 1849 Gold Dollar captures a pivotal moment when American coinage was changing alongside the country itself. Its inaugural-year status and unmistakable connection to the Gold Rush era have made it an enduring favorite among collectors.

History

Congress authorized the Gold Dollar on March 3, 1849, alongside another new denomination at the opposite end of the spectrum: the $20 Double Eagle. While proposals for a gold dollar predated the California discoveries, the enormous influx of gold beginning in 1848 helped create ideal conditions for expanding the nation’s gold coinage.

The Type 1 Gold Dollar was struck from 1849 through 1854. At just 13 millimeters in diameter, it was remarkably small, even by nineteenth-century standards, and its diminutive size made it easy to lose and difficult to handle in everyday commerce. Despite its brief six-year production run, the Type 1 remains an important early chapter in the history of America’s smallest gold denomination. For collectors, the 1849 issue carries an added distinction as the coin that started it all.

Design

Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the obverse features Liberty facing left and wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies surround her portrait, with the date positioned below.

The reverse places 1 DOLLAR and the date within a wreath, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The wreath incorporates agricultural elements including cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat, imagery that reflected the agricultural identity and prosperity of the growing nation. Small in size but rich in history, the 1849 Gold Dollar offers a direct connection to the opening years of America’s Gold Rush era.
