Introduction
The 1794 Flowing Hair Cent S-22 represents one of the earliest surviving copper coins struck by the United States Mint. Graded PCGS MS65 Brown with CAC approval, this remarkable example offers exceptional preservation for an issue produced during the infancy of American coinage. Early Large Cents from the 1790s are prized for their historical importance, and high-grade survivors such as this stand among the most desirable pieces in the entire early copper series.
History
The Flowing Hair Large Cent was produced during the formative years of the United States Mint, established in Philadelphia shortly after the nation gained independence. In 1794, the Mint was still refining its coinage operations, resulting in limited production and significant die variation among surviving examples. The Sheldon-22 variety is one of the recognized die marriages cataloged within the early cent series. Large Cents circulated heavily in daily commerce during the late 18th century, making Mint State survivors exceptionally rare today. Coins with CAC approval at this level are especially prized among advanced collectors of early American numismatics.
Design
The obverse features Liberty with long flowing hair, symbolizing freedom and the youthful spirit of the new republic. The word LIBERTY appears above the portrait, while the date 1794 is positioned below. The design reflects the neoclassical artistic influences commonly seen in early American coinage.
The reverse displays a wreath surrounding the denomination ONE CENT, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA encircling the outer design. A fraction reading 1/100 appears below the wreath, representing the coin’s value as one-hundredth of a dollar. The simple yet elegant composition reflects the practical and symbolic goals of America’s earliest federal coinage.
