Introduction

The 1848-O Seated Liberty Half Dime graded PCGS MS66 CAC is an exceptional survivor from one of America’s most storied branch mints. Struck at the New Orleans Mint and preserved at the Gem Mint State level, this coin offers a remarkable look at a silver denomination that once played an important role in everyday American commerce. History

The Seated Liberty Half Dime was introduced in 1837 as the United States Mint modernized the nation’s silver coinage. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the series would remain in production through 1873, spanning decades of economic growth, territorial expansion, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.

The 1848-O issue was struck at the New Orleans Mint with a mintage of 600,000 coins. While relatively scarce across all grades rather than a true rarity, Mint State examples are considerably more challenging, particularly at the Gem level. New Orleans strikes of this issue are also known for areas of weakness, making the quality and preservation of an MS66 CAC specimen especially compelling.

Design

The obverse features Liberty seated upon a rock, holding a liberty pole topped with a Phrygian cap in one hand and supporting a shield inscribed with LIBERTY in the other. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies surround the figure, with the date positioned below. By 1848, the design included the additional fold of drapery at Liberty’s elbow introduced during modifications made in 1840.

The reverse places the denomination HALF DIME within a laurel wreath, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Simple and distinctly classical, the design gives this tiny silver coin an unmistakable presence. In MS66 CAC, the 1848-O combines New Orleans Mint history, genuine condition rarity, and exceptional preservation in one remarkably small piece of American coinage.
