Introduction

The 1849 $10 Liberty Gold Eagle graded PCGS AU55 is a well-preserved example of classic United States gold coinage from a pivotal year in American history. Certified About Uncirculated 55 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), this coin survives with only light wear from circulation. Struck as the California Gold Rush began transforming the nation’s economy and accelerating westward migration, the 1849 Eagle offers a tangible connection to one of the most consequential periods of American expansion.

History

The Liberty Head Eagle was introduced in 1838 and remained in production through 1907. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the $10 denomination played an important role in American commerce and banking throughout the nineteenth century, with production expanding to branch mints as the nation grew.

The Philadelphia Mint struck 653,618 Liberty Head Eagles in 1849, the same year the California Gold Rush captured the nation’s attention. Following the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1848, the rush accelerated dramatically in 1849 as thousands of prospectors traveled west in search of opportunity. The enormous influx of California gold would soon reshape United States coinage, contributing to the creation of the Gold Dollar and $20 Double Eagle and dramatically increasing federal gold production. Certified PCGS AU55, this example preserves the 1849 issue at the About Uncirculated level while connecting directly to the year of the famed Forty-Niners.

Design

The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states surround her portrait, with the date positioned below. Gobrecht’s classical interpretation of Liberty became one of the defining images of nineteenth-century American gold coinage.

The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings and a Union shield across its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons as symbols of peace and military preparedness. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TEN D. identify the issuing nation and denomination. Because IN GOD WE TRUST was not added to the Liberty Head Eagle until 1866, the 1849 represents the earlier No Motto design type.
