I made the order via check and didn't hear from anyone until I called over a month later to find out when the order would ship. I was told it wasn't placed but it would be that day. It amazes me that I could make an order, send a check that would be cleared, and not hear from a representative. That is very poor customer service.

Introduction

The 1876 $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle represents one of the most iconic large gold coins in American numismatic history. Struck in nearly a full ounce of gold and graded PCGS AU58, this example sits at the threshold of Mint State preservation, retaining strong original luster with only the slightest trace of circulation. Coins of this quality offer collectors an attractive balance of historical significance, visual appeal, and enduring gold content.

History

The Liberty Head Double Eagle was introduced in 1850 following the California Gold Rush, which dramatically increased the nation’s gold reserves. The $20 denomination quickly became a cornerstone of large financial transactions and international trade. By 1876, the United States was celebrating its Centennial year, marking one hundred years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. During this era, Double Eagles circulated widely in commerce and were frequently exported overseas for banking and trade, making well-preserved examples increasingly desirable to modern collectors.

Design

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, representing the original states, while the date appears below. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the composition reflects the classical artistic style favored in mid-19th century American coinage.
The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with a shield across its chest, holding an olive branch and arrows that symbolize peace and strength. Above the eagle appears a semicircle of thirteen stars, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the design and the denomination TWENTY D appears below. The large format of the Double Eagle allowed for impressive detail and strong visual presence.
