The 1882 $5 Liberty Half Eagle is an exquisite relic from the golden age of American coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this piece features the iconic Liberty Head design and has been certified CACG MS66, placing it in the upper echelon of surviving examples. Coins from this era were made for everyday use, making Mint State survivors in such outstanding condition highly desirable and increasingly scarce.

Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Head series is a cornerstone of 19th-century U.S. gold coinage. On the obverse, Liberty is portrayed wearing a classical coronet inscribed with the word “LIBERTY,” surrounded by thirteen stars symbolizing the original colonies. The reverse shows a stately eagle grasping arrows and an olive branch, a symbol of American strength and peace.

This 1882 issue represents an important period in United States history. Following the end of Reconstruction, the country was undergoing rapid industrial growth and westward expansion. Gold coins were an essential part of commerce, routinely exchanged across banks, railroads, and trade routes. As a result, many saw heavy circulation and suffered wear over time.

Graded MS66 by CACG, this coin stands out for its sharp strike, rich luster, and minimal contact marks. CACG’s grading reputation assures collectors and investors alike of the coin’s premium quality. Only a tiny fraction of 1882 Half Eagles survive at this level of preservation, making this example an elite addition to any high-end type or date collection.
