You have the lowest price on Silver Eagles. I give one to each new Great Grandchild when born and I keep one for my collection.

Introduction

The 1883 $5 Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle stands among the most elite proof issues of the Liberty Head series. Graded PCGS PR67 Deep Cameo with CAC approval, this coin represents exceptional preservation, featuring deeply mirrored fields and bold frosted devices that create dramatic contrast. With an original mintage of just 61 pieces, this issue offers remarkable rarity alongside top-tier quality.

History

Proof Liberty Head Half Eagles were struck in extremely limited quantities during the 19th century, primarily for collectors and special presentation purposes. In 1883, only 61 proof examples were produced, making it one of the lowest mintage issues of the series. Many of these coins did not survive in high grades due to handling, storage, or later melting. As a result, examples certified at the PR67 Deep Cameo level with CAC approval are exceptionally scarce and represent the upper echelon of surviving specimens.

Design

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original states, with the date below. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the composition reflects the classical influences seen throughout 19th century American coinage.
The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with a shield across its chest, holding an olive branch and arrows symbolizing peace and strength. Above the eagle appears the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA encircles the design and the denomination FIVE DOLLARS is shown below. The Deep Cameo proof finish enhances the design, with frosted devices standing out sharply against highly reflective mirrored fields.

A LITTLE STICKER MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE.

Within each number of the coin grading scale is a small range of condition from low-end to high-end. Certified coins of the same grade can be of varying quality. Many of today’s collectors want coins that are solid or premium quality for their assigned grade. CAC holds coins to a higher standard so you can be confident in the value of yours. We verify previously graded coins … and award our sticker only to those coins that meet the standard for today’s selective buyer.

WHAT THE CAC STICKER MEANS:

  • Verified. Your coin has been verified as meeting the standard for strict quality within its grade.
  • Guaranteed. CAC stands behind our verification.

THE CAC STICKER IS BACKED BY EXPERIENCE.

CAC was founded by leading members of the numismatic community, including John Albanese, a respected authority on coin grading and the rare coin market.
