With a low original mintage of just 350,000 coins, the 1889-CC combines scarcity, historic Carson City provenance, and the enduring appeal of one of America's most widely collected silver dollars.
History
The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878 following passage of the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase substantial quantities of silver and convert it into silver dollars. Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan created the new design, beginning a series that would become closely associated with the mining history and economic expansion of the American West.
The Carson City Mint suspended coinage operations in 1885 and did not resume production until October 1889. Only 350,000 Morgan Dollars were struck at Carson City before the end of the year, giving the 1889-CC one of the lowest mintages in the series. Many were later lost to melting, further reducing the number of surviving examples. Unlike several other Carson City dates that became more widely available through major Treasury releases during the twentieth century, the 1889-CC remained scarce. Today, it is recognized as one of the key dates of the Morgan Dollar series and is particularly desirable in higher circulated and Mint State grades.
Design
The obverse features George T. Morgan's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, reflecting the nation's agricultural heritage. A ribbon in Liberty's hair is inscribed with LIBERTY. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears above, thirteen stars represent the original states, and the date 1889 appears below.
The reverse depicts a bald eagle with outstretched wings, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. A wreath surrounds the eagle, while the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR complete the design. The distinctive CC mintmark beneath the wreath identifies this coin as a product of the Carson City Mint in Nevada.
