Introduction
The 1893-O $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle is a compelling example of late 19th-century American gold coinage, certified by NGC in MS62 and further distinguished with CAC approval and a CAC+ designation. Struck in solid 90% gold, this coin offers collectors a tangible link to the economic expansion and industrial growth of the United States during the Gilded Age. With its New Orleans Mint origin and premium certification pedigree, it stands as a highly desirable acquisition for serious numismatists seeking both quality and historical depth.
History
The Liberty Head Half Eagle series, designed by Christian Gobrecht, circulated from 1839 through 1908, serving as a cornerstone of U.S. gold commerce. The 1893-O issue was struck at the New Orleans Mint during a period of fluctuating economic conditions, just before the national financial panic of 1893 fully unfolded. Survivorship of well-preserved examples from this mint is notably limited, as heavy circulation and melting events significantly reduced available populations. Coins that remain in Mint State condition represent a small fraction of original production, making certified examples especially important to advanced collectors.
Design
The obverse features the classic Liberty portrait crowned with a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY,” surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date positioned below. The reverse displays the heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing both military readiness and a preference for peace. The “O” mintmark, located beneath the eagle, confirms its New Orleans origin. The MS62 grade indicates strong mint luster with minimal marks, while CAC approval and the CAC+ designation further affirm superior quality within the assigned grade.
