Introduction
The 1893-O $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle graded PCGS MS63 CAC is a rare survivor from one of the most intriguing southern branch mints in U.S. history. Struck at the New Orleans Mint in limited numbers, this coin combines exceptional preservation, historic appeal, and the added distinction of CAC approval—verifying its superior quality within the grade. Vibrant luster, strong detail, and classic 19th-century artistry make this Mint State specimen a standout addition to any advanced numismatic collection.
History
The Liberty Head Half Eagle series was introduced in 1839 and remained in production until 1908, spanning some of the most transformative decades in American history. The New Orleans Mint, identifiable by its “O” mintmark, played a vital role in the coinage of gold for the American South. By 1893, economic uncertainty and limited gold reserves led to smaller mintages at New Orleans, with just 110,000 pieces struck that year. Most circulated heavily in commerce and were later melted, leaving few high-grade survivors. Today, Mint State examples with CAC approval are especially coveted for their rarity and superior eye appeal.
Design
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse of the 1893-O $5 Liberty features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY,” surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing America’s balance of strength and peace. The “O” mintmark below the eagle identifies its New Orleans origin. Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, the coin weighs 8.36 grams and measures approximately 21.6 mm in diameter. The sharp strike, original surfaces, and warm golden tone of this PCGS MS63 CAC example showcase the enduring beauty of pre-20th century U.S. gold coinage.
