Introduction
The 1902 $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle graded PCGS MS67 CAC is an exceptional example of one of America’s longest-running classic gold coin designs. Certified Superb Gem Mint State 67 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and approved by Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), this coin stands out for its remarkable state of preservation. While the 1902 is considered a more readily available date within the series, examples at this level are a different story. An MS67 CAC specimen represents the Liberty Quarter Eagle at a level of quality few surviving coins can match.
History
Introduced in 1840, the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle remained in production through 1907, giving Christian Gobrecht’s design a remarkable 68-year run. During that time, the coin witnessed the California Gold Rush, the Civil War, westward expansion, and America’s rise as an industrial and economic power.
The 1902 issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, with a mintage of 133,540 coins, during the final chapter of the Liberty Head series. By this period, Quarter Eagles were increasingly saved by collectors or presented as gifts rather than simply spent in everyday commerce. Six years later, Bela Lyon Pratt’s radically different incuse Indian Head design would replace Gobrecht’s familiar Liberty.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies surround her portrait, with the date positioned below. Gobrecht’s neoclassical Liberty became a familiar presence on American gold coinage throughout much of the nineteenth century.
The reverse features a heraldic eagle with a Union shield across its breast, clutching an olive branch and arrows to represent peace and military preparedness. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 2½ D. complete a design that remained fundamentally unchanged throughout the series. In MS67 CAC, the 1902 Quarter Eagle offers something far more difficult to find than the date alone might suggest: an exceptionally preserved example of a classic American gold type.
