Introduction
The 1907 $10 Indian No Motto Gold Eagle graded PCGS MS64+ CAC is an exceptional first-year example of one of the most celebrated designs in American gold coinage. Certified MS64+ by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and approved by Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), this Philadelphia Mint issue offers an impressive combination of preservation, eye appeal, and historic significance. As an original No Motto issue from the inaugural year of the Indian Head Eagle series, this coin represents an important chapter in the transformation of American coinage during the early twentieth century.
History
The Indian Head Eagle debuted in 1907 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's ambitious effort to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Roosevelt commissioned renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the nation's $10 and $20 gold coins, resulting in two dramatically different designs that helped define what became known as the Renaissance of American Coinage.
Before the regular 1907 Indian Eagle entered production, the Mint experimented with several versions of Saint-Gaudens' new design, including the famous Wire Edge and Rolled Edge issues. After further modifications, the Philadelphia Mint struck 239,406 examples of the regular 1907 No Motto issue. These coins omitted IN GOD WE TRUST, reflecting Roosevelt's opposition to placing the name of God on circulating money. Congressional action led to the motto's restoration in 1908, making the original No Motto design a short-lived early type within the series.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a feathered headdress inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states appear above the portrait, while the date 1907 is positioned below. Saint-Gaudens' unconventional interpretation of Liberty marked a dramatic departure from the traditional portraits that had dominated earlier United States gold coinage.
The reverse depicts a bald eagle standing upon a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbols of military preparedness and peace. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and TEN DOLLARS complete the design. Notably absent is IN GOD WE TRUST, distinguishing this first-year issue from the With Motto design introduced during 1908.
