Introduction
The 1908 $2 1/2 Indian Head Quarter Eagle graded PCGS MS65 CAC is a Gem Mint State example from the first year of this distinctive U.S. gold series. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the coin introduced an innovative incuse design with its primary devices recessed below the surrounding fields. CAC approval recognizes its quality and eye appeal within the assigned MS65 grade.
History
The Indian Head Quarter Eagle debuted in 1908 as part of the transformation of American gold coinage during the early 20th century. Sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt created the new $2.50 design, which departed dramatically from the traditional raised-relief designs used on earlier U.S. coins.
Rather than rising above the fields, the principal design elements were recessed into the coin's surface. This incuse approach gave the Indian Head Quarter Eagle a distinctive appearance that continued throughout the series from 1908 through 1929.
The Philadelphia Mint struck 564,821 Indian Head Quarter Eagles in 1908. As the first year of the new design, many examples were saved by the public, helping make the date relatively accessible in Mint State. Gem MS65 examples offer a higher level of preservation while retaining the historical significance of the inaugural issue.
Design
The obverse features a Native American portrait wearing a feathered headdress, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original states. The inscription LIBERTY appears above, with the date 1908 below.
The reverse depicts an eagle standing on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2 1/2 DOLLARS. As a Philadelphia Mint issue, the coin carries no mintmark.
