History

The Indian Head Half Eagle debuted in 1908 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's campaign to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Renowned sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt created a groundbreaking design featuring recessed, or incuse, devices rather than the traditional raised relief used on virtually all previous U.S. coins. The Philadelphia Mint produced just 167 proof examples in 1908, making the issue one of the scarcer proof gold coins of its era. Design

The obverse features a left-facing Native American portrait wearing a feathered headdress, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. LIBERTY appears above the portrait, while the date is positioned below. The recessed design elements create a sculptural appearance that distinguishes the coin from traditional American gold issues.
The reverse depicts a standing eagle perched upon a bundle of arrows entwined with an olive branch, symbolizing strength and peace.
