Introduction
The 1909-O $5 Indian Head Gold Half Eagle is one of the most desirable branch mint issues in the entire Indian Half Eagle series. Graded PCGS AU50 and approved by CAC, this historic New Orleans Mint coin combines scarcity, distinctive design, and Southern mint heritage. As one of the few Indian Head gold coins produced at the famed New Orleans Mint, the 1909-O remains a favorite among collectors of classic United States gold coinage.
History
The Indian Head Half Eagle series was introduced in 1908 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's campaign to beautify American coinage. Designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, the series broke from tradition by utilizing an incuse design, with the devices recessed below the surface of the coin. The 1909-O issue is especially significant because it was struck at the New Orleans Mint during that facility's final years of operation. With a mintage of just 34,200 pieces, the 1909-O is among the key dates of the series and remains highly sought after by collectors today.
Design
The obverse features a left-facing Native American portrait wearing a feathered headdress, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. LIBERTY appears above the portrait, while the date is positioned below. Pratt's innovative incuse design gives the coin a bold and distinctive appearance unlike any previous United States gold issue.
The reverse depicts a standing eagle perched upon a bundle of arrows entwined with an olive branch, symbolizing both military preparedness and peace. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and FIVE DOLLARS. The "O" mintmark identifies the coin as a product of the historic New Orleans Mint.
