Introduction
The 1910-D $10 Indian Gold Eagle graded PCGS MS64 CAC is an impressive Choice Mint State example of one of the most celebrated designs in American gold coinage. Certified MS64 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and approved by Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), this Denver Mint issue combines high-grade preservation with the historic appeal of classic pre-1933 United States gold. Containing approximately .48375 troy ounces of pure gold, the 1910-D Indian Eagle brings together substantial precious metal content, branch-mint history, and the artistry of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
History
The Indian Head Eagle debuted in 1907 during President Theodore Roosevelt's campaign to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Roosevelt commissioned renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the nation's $10 and $20 gold coins, resulting in two dramatically different designs that helped define the Renaissance of American Coinage. The Indian Head Eagle remained in production through 1933, although coins were not struck in every year.
The Denver Mint struck 2,356,640 Indian Head Eagles in 1910, making the 1910-D by far the most common branch-mint issue of the series. Large numbers were exported to Europe through international financial channels, and many surviving examples were later repatriated to the United States. This history helps explain the relatively strong availability of the issue in Mint State today. At PCGS MS64 with CAC approval, this example stands out for its Choice Mint State preservation and additional assessment of quality within the assigned grade.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a feathered headdress inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states appear above the portrait, while the date 1910 is positioned below. Saint-Gaudens' bold interpretation of Liberty marked a dramatic departure from the traditional portraits that had dominated earlier United States gold coinage.
The reverse depicts a bald eagle standing upon a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbols of military preparedness and peace. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and TEN DOLLARS complete the design. The D mintmark identifies this example as a product of the Denver Mint.
