History

The Indian Head Quarter Eagle series debuted in 1908 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's effort to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Renowned sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt broke centuries of tradition by creating an incuse, or recessed, design rather than the raised relief commonly found on coins.
At the time, the design sparked controversy. Some critics claimed the recessed surfaces would collect dirt and germs, making the coins potential carriers of disease. These concerns ultimately proved unfounded, and the unique design has since become one of the most celebrated innovations in American numismatics.
The Denver Mint produced just 55,680 Quarter Eagles in 1911, making the 1911-D a better-date issue with a relatively limited mintage. While many entered circulation during the early twentieth century, Mint State survivors are considerably scarcer. Today, CAC-approved examples are especially sought after by collectors who value superior quality and originality within certified grades.

Design

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of a Native American wearing a full feathered headdress, surrounded by thirteen stars with the date positioned below. Pratt's revolutionary incuse design gives the coin a distinctive appearance unlike any other United States circulating gold coin. Although the design was not universally accepted when it was first introduced, the Indian Head Quarter Eagle is now widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and innovative coins ever produced by the United States Mint.
The reverse depicts a standing eagle perched atop a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbolizing both military preparedness and peace. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, and the denomination “2 1/2 DOLLARS” complete the design. The "D" mintmark appears to the left of the arrow bundle, identifying the coin as a product of the Denver Mint.
