Introduction
The 1911-D $5 Indian Head Gold Half Eagle is widely recognized as the key date of the Indian Head Half Eagle series. Graded PCGS MS62 and approved by CAC, this example offers a desirable combination of Mint State preservation and original quality. Coins of this issue are seldom encountered in higher grades, making this piece an important opportunity for collectors seeking a cornerstone coin within the series.
History
Introduced in 1908 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s effort to modernize American coinage, the Indian Head Half Eagle represented a bold shift in design and production. The 1911-D issue, struck at the Denver Mint, had a relatively low mintage and saw significant circulation, resulting in a limited number of surviving Mint State examples. Over time, the 1911-D has become the most sought-after date in the series, prized for both its scarcity and its status as a key issue in early 20th-century United States gold coinage.
Design
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of a Native American wearing a detailed feathered headdress, with LIBERTY inscribed above and the date below. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the coin utilizes an incuse design in which the devices are recessed into the surface rather than raised, creating a distinctive and innovative appearance.
The reverse displays a standing eagle perched on a bundle of arrows intertwined with an olive branch, symbolizing strength and peace. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE DOLLARS. The incuse design continues on the reverse, providing a cohesive and bold aesthetic that sets the Indian Head series apart from earlier American coinage.
