Introduction
The 1911-S $10 Indian Gold Eagle graded PCGS MS61 CAC is a Mint State example of a genuinely scarce issue from one of America's most celebrated gold coin series. Certified MS61 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and approved by Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), this San Francisco Mint coin combines historic significance with the artistry of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. With an original mintage of just 51,000 coins and approximately .48375 troy ounces of pure gold, the 1911-S brings together scarcity, precious metal content, and the enduring appeal of classic pre-1933 United States gold.
History
The Indian Head Eagle debuted in 1907 during President Theodore Roosevelt's campaign to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Roosevelt commissioned renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the nation's $10 and $20 gold coins, resulting in two dramatically different designs that helped define the Renaissance of American Coinage. The Indian Head Eagle remained in production through 1933, although coins were not struck in every year.
The San Francisco Mint struck only 51,000 Indian Head Eagles in 1911, giving the 1911-S one of the lower mintages in the series. Mint State examples were once exceptionally difficult to locate until a small hoard surfaced in Europe during the late 1970s, improving the availability of uncirculated survivors. Even after that discovery, the 1911-S remains a scarce issue, with higher-grade examples becoming increasingly difficult to acquire. At PCGS MS61 with CAC approval, this coin offers a desirable Mint State representative of an important low-mintage San Francisco issue.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a feathered headdress inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states appear above the portrait, while the date 1911 is positioned below. Saint-Gaudens' bold interpretation of Liberty marked a dramatic departure from the traditional portraits that had dominated earlier United States gold coinage.
The reverse depicts a bald eagle standing upon a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbols of military preparedness and peace. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and TEN DOLLARS complete the design. The S mintmark identifies this example as a product of the San Francisco Mint.
