Introduction

The 1915-S $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle graded PCGS MS64 is a stunning example of one of the most celebrated coins in American numismatic history. Struck at the San Francisco Mint and certified by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), this Choice Mint State specimen displays outstanding luster, sharp design details, and impressive eye appeal. Combining nearly one ounce of gold with Augustus Saint-Gaudens' iconic artistry, the 1915-S Double Eagle remains a cornerstone of advanced collections and precious metals portfolios alike.

History

Introduced in 1907 at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was created to elevate the artistic quality of United States coinage. Renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens produced a design that is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful ever placed on a circulating coin. The series remained in production until 1933, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt's gold recall effectively ended the circulation of America's classic gold coinage.

The 1915-S issue was struck at the San Francisco Mint during an era when Double Eagles played a critical role in banking and international commerce. Although a substantial number were produced, many were later melted following changes to U.S. monetary policy in the 1930s. Certified PCGS MS64, this example represents an exceptionally well-preserved survivor, offering collectors a desirable balance of quality, rarity, and historical significance.

Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty striding confidently forward while carrying a torch and an olive branch, symbolizing enlightenment and peace. Behind Liberty, the rays of the rising sun illuminate the United States Capitol, while stars encircle the design representing the states in the Union. Saint-Gaudens' dynamic composition is widely considered the pinnacle of American coin artistry.

The reverse depicts a majestic bald eagle soaring above the rising sun, conveying strength, optimism, and freedom. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST complete the design. The S mintmark identifies the coin as a product of the San Francisco Mint.
