Introduction
The 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter is one of the most iconic and sought-after coins in U.S. numismatics. As the first year of issue for the series, its low mintage and elegant design make it a centerpiece for any advanced collection. Certified by NGC as VF25 and verified by CAC for quality, this example showcases strong detail and original surfaces consistent with careful circulation and excellent preservation.
History
Introduced in 1916, the Standing Liberty Quarter replaced the long-running Barber Quarter series. Sculptor Hermon A. MacNeil designed the coin to embody American liberty and strength during a time of international turmoil leading up to U.S. involvement in World War I.
The Philadelphia Mint struck only 52,000 pieces in 1916, a remarkably low number even by early 20th-century standards. Most entered circulation, leaving few survivors in collectible condition. Its rarity and status as the inaugural issue of the series make the 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter a cornerstone for type and date collectors alike.
Design
The obverse features a striking depiction of Liberty standing in a gateway, holding a shield in her left hand and an olive branch in her right—a powerful symbol of peace through strength. The date appears boldly at the base of the design. This early 1916 type, known as the “Type 1,” portrays Liberty with a bare breast, a detail later modified in 1917 after public criticism.
The reverse displays a majestic eagle in flight surrounded by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR encircle the design, completing MacNeil’s neoclassical vision of American freedom.
This NGC VF25 CAC example retains sharp definition in the central design elements and smooth, natural toning, hallmarks of originality that are increasingly rare among surviving 1916 issues.
