Introduction
The 1918/7-S Standing Liberty Quarter is one of the most famous and significant overdates in all of U.S. coinage. This scarce variety, graded F12 by PCGS and verified by CAC, represents a classic rarity from the early 20th century. With its strong detail and attractive originality, this example embodies the historical intrigue and numismatic appeal that define the Standing Liberty series.
History
The Standing Liberty Quarter, designed by Hermon A. MacNeil, was introduced in 1916 and struck through 1930. The 1918/7-S variety was created when a 1917-dated die was mistakenly overpunched with an 8, resulting in a dramatic overdate visible beneath the final digit.
This minting error occurred at the San Francisco Mint and went unnoticed for years, as most examples entered circulation immediately. The variety remained undiscovered until the 1930s, by which time very few well-preserved examples remained.
With a mintage of approximately 11 million for all 1918-S quarters, only a small fraction were of the 1918/7-S overdate type. Today, this coin ranks among the most sought-after key dates in the Standing Liberty Quarter series and is a cornerstone for advanced collectors of classic U.S. silver coinage.
Design
The obverse features Liberty standing confidently between two pillars, holding an olive branch of peace in her right hand and a shield in her left. The overdate is visible in the final digit of the year, where traces of the underlying 7 can be seen beneath the 8. The inscription IN GOD WE TRUST appears across the gateway above Liberty’s head.
The reverse depicts an eagle in flight surrounded by thirteen stars, symbolizing the original American colonies. The S mint mark appears below the eagle, identifying its origin at the San Francisco Mint.
This PCGS F12 CAC specimen displays solid detail for the grade and even, original patina, capturing the timeless artistry of MacNeil’s design and the historical significance of one of America’s greatest numismatic varieties.
