Introduction
The 1920-S $10 Indian Gold Eagle graded PCGS AU58 CAC is an exceptional near-Mint State example of one of the great rarities in the Indian Head Eagle series. Certified AU58 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and approved by Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), this San Francisco Mint issue sits just below Mint State while retaining strong detail and much of its original character. With an original mintage of 126,500 coins and remarkably few survivors today, the 1920-S represents a significant opportunity for advanced collectors of pre-1933 United States gold.
History
The Indian Head Eagle debuted in 1907 during President Theodore Roosevelt's campaign to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Roosevelt commissioned renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the nation's $10 and $20 gold coins, resulting in two dramatically different designs that helped define the Renaissance of American Coinage. The Indian Head Eagle remained in production through 1933, although production became increasingly intermittent during the later years of the series.
After no Indian Head Eagles were struck in 1917, 1918, or 1919, production resumed at the San Francisco Mint in 1920 with a mintage of 126,500 coins. Yet the original figure tells only part of the story. The vast majority were later melted, leaving the 1920-S as one of the principal rarities of the entire series and particularly elusive in Mint State. At PCGS AU58 with CAC approval, this example stands at the threshold of Mint State preservation and offers an important opportunity to acquire one of the key issues of the Indian Head Eagle series.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a feathered headdress inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states appear above the portrait, while the date 1920 is positioned below. Saint-Gaudens' bold interpretation of Liberty helped redefine the appearance of American gold coinage during the early twentieth century.
The reverse depicts a bald eagle standing upon a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbols of military preparedness and peace. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and TEN DOLLARS complete the design. The S mintmark identifies this important issue as a product of the San Francisco Mint.
